Forum Post: CCS6 / GUI Composer running incredibly SLOW for Stepper Motor Booster Board App

$

Hi, I have just received the Stepper Motor Boosterpack and have found the GUI Tool extremely slow and un-usable

I am using CCS 6.0, the GUI tool is the one linked direct from the Boosterpack site "BOOST-DRV8711_GUIv1.0". Windows 8.1 64bit and an I7 processor

The app loads almost instantly but the following then occures

upto 1Min to recognise the MSP430G2553 board and its com port

a further 2-3 minutes to gather the status from the board so the red x goes away from the various controls

at this point it can take over 6 minutes for any control to take an action and that is not in every case, sometimes it does not happen at all, for instance clicking on the sleep button does not wake up the board for over 6 minutes, clicking the clear fault can take as long if not longer to take affect and sometimes does not work at all. To all intents and purposes it is useless as is. I would happily code a direct windows application but the commands to the board do not seem to be published for the sample application which is coded in CCS and not easy to follow and as of today I can not find any Energia examples.

I have tried the various changes to CCS ini file and this makes no difference, also I should not be having to disable my network or un-install Chrome to make an application work

I hope you can help in resolving his as I would like to review the booster board asap for Element14 and get t onto their web forums

Thanks

Peter Oakes

Thanks for reply.

Yes - the black one.

So as I understand this debugger didn't work with CCS5.x ??

The problem is that I get some old project made with CCS 5.2, but didn't get he debugger. So I bought the only one that is available - the black MSP-FET

I just don't understand why TI didn't publish that this debugger don't support CCS from version 5.x and earlier ??

May be there is something that I can do for fix this problem?

Hello,

This question is best posted in the device forum for the device you are using. I can move it there but first please let me know what device you are using.

Thanks

Hi Tim,

You mentioned that you just installed CCS. But you also mentioned that it is compiling much slower than it used to. What are you benchmarking the current CCS compiler performance against?

Also provide the CCS version, compiler version and device part that you are using.

Thanks

ki

Hello,

I assume you are trying to do JTAG debug with a device running embedded Linux. I just want to confirm that you are NOT using a startup GEL file. Is that correct?

Thanks

Hi!

My config:

Code Composer Studio:
Version: 6.0.1.00040

Toolchain:

arm-2010q1 arm-none-linux-gnueabi-

I need to debug wifi driver, to do so, i've created a C/C++ makefile project with existing code in CCS. Then i patched the kernel (turn on "Compile kernel with debug info" and so on...), after that I’ve rebuilt  the wi-fi driver.
The troubles starts then i try to load symbols from my wifi driver. After pressing OK button in the Load symbols window the CCS begins to load symbols, but crashes after a couple of seconds. There aren't any error messages or something else, just shutdown.

To find a reason of this i tried to rebuild kernel and wifi driver with another toolchain (i have arm-2010q1 arm-none-linux-gnueabi and arm-linux-gnueabi), to clear the CCS workspace and .ti folders, to create a new project, but result is the same.

But if i do the same steps with another driver (for example hdmi tda998x.ko), everything is ok and i able to debug it.

On the target side wi-fi driver is loading well in release/debug configuration.

Please see screen-shots and log files in attach.

Hi Makarand,

I believe there is a related issue reported. Do you have a TI FAE? I'm wondering if it is the same issue.

Anway, I'm not sure what the issue may be. If the error occurs when trying to load symbols, I'd like to get your vmlinux file. Can you send me a friend request and then we can find a way for me to get the file. Or if you have a TI FAE, I can work through the FAE.

Hi Yuri,

the only option would be to install ccsv6 and import the projects.  Sorry for any inconvenience.

Same version in both, 7.4.8. Actually the .obj files are generated but the .lib doesn't exist. I will try that suite and get back to you.

David.

Hi,

Unfortunately I have not hit the same issues as you, therefore I can only corroborate what Gautam mentioned and give some additional tips: you can reset your menus by looking at the section General IDE of the Troubleshooting CCSv6 page. Also, given this menu belongs to the CCS Debug perspective, perhaps the section Debugger of this same page can help you resetting a few of these menus.

Obviously the instability may also stem from the combination of components you are using. Just to double-check this aspect, check the thread below:

http://e2e.ti.com/support/embedded/tirtos/f/355/t/347073.aspx

Hope this helps,

Rafael

Due to a limitation in eclipse, the username cannot contain any Unicode characters. In order to install the product, please create a temporary admin user and install CCS for all users as adminstrator.
Looks like the link you provided is only for the  XDC Core versions.
Use this version:

http://software-dl.ti.com/dsps/dsps_public_sw/sdo_sb/targetcontent/rtsc/3_30_01_25/index_FDS.html
Also, any idea why the path to the compiler.opt file is so messed up in the generated build-related files?
Not sure what is happening there. I'm hoping have a correct XDC installation will help.

The SP should always be even.  See the section titled Stack Alignment in the MSP430 Embedded Application Binary Interface document.

The routine that sets up the C environment is called the boot routine.  It has a name that starts with "_c_int00".  Please step through the boot routine (probably not that long) to see where the SP becomes odd.

Thanks and regards,

I have been playing around with AET for a bit and it looks like my original solution is not the best because the target *is* halted when evaluating the GEL expression (even though no target access is needed to evaluate the expression). This violates your requirement of non-intrsiveness.

There may be some other tricks you can do with asserting emu pins and then counting the assertions. But I will forward this thread to the AET experts and defer to their wisdom.

Thanks

Hi Saskia,

This is an unrelated issue that is related to compilation. Please repost this as a separate thread in the compiler forum.

Thanks
