The lsusb/lspci does not necessarily mean the device drivers are installed (reference: here).
Also, despite I opened the .deb file directly using Ubuntu's graphical package manager, the install procedure you sent looks just fine to me - the device drivers should have been installed.
All that said, you mentioned in your first post that you are running on a VM. Despite I did all my tests on a VM as well (with Windows 7 as host OS), perhaps your host OS is getting in the way of a proper connection. In our experience the combination of OSes and emulator models make quite a difference on how successful the connections are (reference: here).
One last idea I have is to simply try to use a native Linux machine - this usually works around several possible limitations mentioned above.
